The rain held off this morning and so I caught a bus to Smalley to do a bit of geanealogical research. It's not very far from Alfreton, but I've never been there. My g grandfather, Joseph Allard, was born there in the 1860s, and his g grandfather Roe farmed there before that. I took some old maps with me and poked about for a couple of hours.
Some of the older buildings are still there, and the village is quite pretty. But you won't find any quaint tea shoppes or souvenir shops here.
I am a (very) distant cousin of the Rev. Charles Kerry whose fine tombstone is in the foreground of this picture. He wrote a whole book about the families of Smalley and one day I'm going to get it on film from the LDS. Today, I contented myself with the churchyard and recording names and dates I found there. For a while, gggg grandad Roe was a churchwarden here.
Fine stone carvings are all around the church, but sadly the church door was locked. Tonight I'm going out for dinner with some school friends I haven't seen since 1976.
